Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about WHOIS / RDAP Domain Lookup

What's the difference between RDAP and WHOIS?
WHOIS is the original 1980s protocol for domain ownership data — text-based, inconsistent format per registrar. RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol, RFC 7480) is the standardized JSON-over-HTTPS replacement that ICANN mandated for all gTLDs in 2024. This tool uses RDAP, which is faster and gives you reliable structured data.
Why is the registrant org blank for some domains?
Since GDPR (2018) and ICANN's Temporary Specification, registrars must redact most personal data for individuals. Organization-owned domains often still show the org name; personal domains show 'REDACTED FOR PRIVACY'. The registrar and abuse email are always shown.
Why does my .io / .ai / .co lookup fail sometimes?
Some country-code TLDs haven't adopted RDAP yet, or their RDAP servers are slow. The tool uses rdap.org as a bootstrap that finds the right authoritative server per TLD; failures usually mean the TLD's RDAP service is down or the domain isn't registered.
What do the status flags mean?
ICANN-defined status codes describing what operations are allowed on the domain. 'clientTransferProhibited' means the owner has locked transfers (good security practice). 'serverHold' means the registry has suspended the domain (often payment issue or abuse). 'pendingDelete' = scheduled for deletion in 5 days.
Is my lookup query logged?
We make one server-side request to rdap.org (the public RDAP bootstrap). We don't log the domains you query. rdap.org may log requests per its own policy.
